The smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup faces a giant
Curaçao, a Caribbean island of around 156,000 people, arrive in Houston as the smallest country by population ever to qualify for a World Cup, breaking a record held by Iceland. Their reward is a debut against four-time champions Germany. Coach Fred Rutten has made clear his side are not here just to make up the numbers: “We have three chances and the first chance is against Germany,” he told reporters. “Generally there are always surprises. Why not this year for us?”
This is the kind of fixture that makes the expanded World Cup special. Germany are one of the most decorated teams in the sport, making their 21st World Cup appearance with four titles to their name. Under Julian Nagelsmann they rebuilt impressively after the disappointment of group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022, reaching the Euro 2024 quarterfinals on home soil and topping their qualifying group with five wins from six, finishing with a statement 6-0 thrashing of Slovakia.
Their attack is a joy to watch. Florian Wirtz, now at Liverpool, is the creative hub, with Bayern Munich’s Jamal Musiala adding another layer of invention if his fitness holds. Captain Joshua Kimmich controls the tempo from right-back, Antonio Rüdiger anchors the defence, and Kai Havertz and Nick Woltemade give them genuine presence up front. On paper, this is one of the strongest squads in the tournament.
For Curaçao, simply being here is the achievement of a generation. Their squad is built largely on Dutch-born players with Eredivisie and English roots, captained by midfielder Leandro Bacuna and featuring Sheffield United’s Tahith Chong, who switched allegiance in 2025. They will set up to defend deep and stay compact, hoping to frustrate Germany and strike on the break through the pace of forwards like Sontje Hansen. Realistically they are heavy underdogs, but a World Cup debut is a World Cup debut, and they intend to enjoy it.

Match Preview & Prediction
There is no way around the gulf in class here. Germany have played 109 World Cup matches and won four titles; Curaçao are playing their first ever World Cup game. Nagelsmann’s side arrive in form, with a settled system and a front line, led by Wirtz, capable of unlocking even the most stubborn defence. Against a team that will sit deep, Germany’s patience and quality in the final third should eventually tell.
Curaçao’s game plan picks itself: stay compact, defend in numbers, frustrate Germany for as long as possible, and threaten on the counter through Hansen and Chong. Coach Fred Rutten has built a disciplined, well-organised unit, and the Houston heat, even in a climate-controlled stadium, could help them slow the game down. Their realistic aim is to avoid a heavy defeat and take confidence into their matches against Ecuador and Ivory Coast.
Our prediction: Germany 3-0. Germany should win comfortably and will want a big margin to boost their goal difference in a group they are expected to win. Over 3.5 goals is tempting given the gap in quality, and Florian Wirtz to score or assist looks a strong pick. Curaçao may keep it tight early, but Germany’s class should show before half-time.

NRG Stadium, designated Houston Stadium for the tournament, is home to the NFL’s Houston Texans. When it opened in 2002 it was the first NFL venue with a fully retractable roof, and that climate control is a major advantage given Houston’s fierce June heat and humidity, which can top 33°C (91°F).
The stadium has a strong big-event pedigree, having hosted Super Bowl LI in 2017 and matches at the 2024 Copa América. At the 2026 World Cup it stages seven games in total, including Round of 32 and Round of 16 knockout ties. For Curaçao’s players, many of whom are used to cooler European conditions, the air-conditioned interior removes one potential disadvantage on their historic debut.
A Historic First Meeting
Germany and Curaçao have never met at any level. This Group E opener is the first chapter in their shared history, and Curaçao’s first ever World Cup match.

📋 What History Tells Us
Germany: 21st World Cup appearance, four-time champions (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014), with a record 12 top-three finishes and 109 World Cup matches played.
Curaçao: First ever World Cup. The smallest nation by population to qualify, breaking Iceland’s record. Reached the finals through CONCACAF qualifying, one of the standout underdog stories of the campaign.
Odds for the Group E Opener
Germany are overwhelming favourites. The interest is in the margin: a Germany -2 handicap, over 3.5 goals, and Wirtz to score or assist.
