👑 The Group

Group E: Germany Cruising, Ecuador Must Win

Germany have won both games and are already top of the group and into the Round of 32. Ivory Coast sit second. Ecuador are third on a single point, level with Curacao but ahead on goal difference, and realistically must beat Germany to be sure of going through.

The top two qualify automatically, plus the best third-placed teams. Germany are guaranteed top spot; Ecuador likely need a win to advance.

⚽ The Big Picture

Ecuador’s Goal Drought Meets a German Machine

There is no hiding from Ecuador’s central problem: two games, zero goals. A 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast and a goalless draw with Curacao have left La Tri third in the group and in real danger of becoming only the second South American side ever, after Bolivia, to go through an entire World Cup without scoring. Now they must do the hardest thing in the tournament, beat Germany, to avoid that fate. To make it worse, their best creator Kendry Paez is suspended, leaving 36-year-old Enner Valencia and Moises Caicedo to carry the load.

Germany, by contrast, could hardly be in better shape. Julian Nagelsmann’s side hammered Curacao 7-1, then came from behind to beat Ivory Coast 2-1, with Deniz Undav scoring twice off the bench, including a 94th-minute winner. Undav has now had a hand in five goals in just 57 minutes of action, matching Roger Milla’s famous 1990 super-sub campaign. Kai Havertz has scored in both games. Win here and Germany equal their longest ever winning streak of 12 matches and complete a perfect group for the first time since 2006.

There is one small chink. Germany have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last eight World Cup games, going back to the 2014 final, and they have lost centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck to an ankle injury for the rest of the tournament. With Antonio Rudiger and Jonathan Tah likely to reshuffle at the back, a desperate Ecuador throwing bodies forward might just find the opening that has eluded them so far.

Realistically, though, the gulf is wide. Germany have scored nine goals in two games and have far too much quality and depth, even if Nagelsmann rotates with top spot secured. Ecuador must commit men forward, which only opens space for Germany to counter. Expect a German win, likely with goals at both ends given their leaky World Cup defence, and Ecuador finally breaking their duck would be the small consolation.

How They Might Line Up

Nagelsmann is without the injured Schlotterbeck and may rotate with qualification secured, though Havertz and Wirtz should feature. Ecuador are without the suspended Paez and must gamble on attack, leaning on veteran Enner Valencia up top.

Home to the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford is the showpiece venue of this World Cup and will host the final on July 19. With around 82,500 seats, it is the biggest ground at the tournament. A fitting stage for Germany to test, and a daunting one for Ecuador to chase a result on. More on it at Wikipedia.

The Record Between Them

Germany have the edge. The sides have met a handful of times, with Germany winning the most notable fixtures, including a 3-0 group-stage win at the 2006 World Cup and a 4-2 friendly in 2013. Ecuador have lost both of their biggest meetings with the Germans by an aggregate of 7-2.

❓ Common Questions

Ecuador vs Germany: Quick Answers

What time does Ecuador vs Germany kick off?

4pm Eastern in the US, which is 3pm Central and 9pm in the UK. In Quito it is 3pm and in Berlin 10pm. The date is Thursday, June 25, 2026.

What channel is Ecuador vs Germany on in the US?

Fox has the English-language broadcast, with Telemundo in Spanish. You can also stream it via Fubo, Sling TV and YouTube TV.

Is Ecuador vs Germany free to watch in the UK?

Yes. It is on either BBC or ITV, both free to air, with streaming via BBC iPlayer and ITVX.

What does Ecuador need to qualify?

Realistically, a win. Ecuador are third in Group E on one point and likely must beat Germany to be sure of advancing. A draw would leave them hoping other results fall their way, which is unlikely to be enough.

Why is this a big game for Germany?

Germany are already through, but a win would see them complete a perfect group for the first time since 2006 and equal their longest ever winning run of 12 matches.

Have Ecuador ever beaten Germany?

Not in their major meetings. Germany won 3-0 at the 2006 World Cup and 4-2 in a 2013 friendly, the two most significant fixtures between the nations.

Who are the key players?

For Germany, Kai Havertz, Florian Wirtz and super-sub Deniz Undav. For Ecuador, Moises Caicedo in midfield and veteran striker Enner Valencia, with creator Kendry Paez suspended.

What is the prediction?

We expect a 2-1 Germany win. Germany have far more quality, though their leaky World Cup defence and an Ecuador side forced to attack could make for goals at both ends.
