Harry Kane is one goal away from history. His brace against Croatia drew him level with Gary Lineker as England’s all-time leading World Cup scorer, and the next one makes the record his alone. He gets his chance against a Ghana side who, like England, won their opener and arrive in Boston with top spot in Group L genuinely up for grabs. Here is how to watch, when it kicks off near you, and whether the Black Stars can spoil the party.

👑 The Group

Group L Standings: A Battle for Top Spot

Both England and Ghana opened with wins, the Three Lions beating Croatia 4-2 and Ghana edging Panama 1-0 with a stoppage-time winner. That leaves them one and two, separated only by goal difference, with Croatia and Panama already needing to recover. Win here and you are nearly through.

⚽ The Big Picture

Kane Chases History as Ghana Aim to Spoil It

England could hardly have asked for a better start. The 4-2 win over Croatia was their most convincing opening performance in years, with Harry Kane scoring twice, Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford also on the mark, and Thomas Tuchel’s much-debated attack suddenly looking sharp. Only Germany had more shots on target on Matchday 1. Kane now sits level with Gary Lineker on ten World Cup goals for England, and a single strike here would make the record his own. Given he has five goals in five games against African nations, the omens are good.

There is a neat subplot in the dugout, too. Ghana are coached by Carlos Queiroz, a vastly experienced operator whose heaviest ever World Cup defeat as a manager came against this very England side, when his Iran team were beaten 6-2 in 2022. He will have his Black Stars set up to avoid anything like a repeat: compact, disciplined, and dangerous on the break.

The worry for Ghana is that their 1-0 win over Panama flattered them. They mustered just two shots on target, saw barely 38 percent of the ball, and needed a 95th-minute winner from Caleb Yirenkyi to get over the line. Against England’s firepower, that kind of display would be punished. Their hopes rest heavily on the pace of Antoine Semenyo and captain Jordan Ayew, who pressed tirelessly in the opener.

The two nations have crossed paths only once before, a friendly 1-1 draw at Wembley back in 2011, so there is little history to lean on. On current form, England look a class above and should have too much in attack. Expect a comfortable win for the Three Lions, though Ghana’s counter-attacking threat means a clean sheet is far from guaranteed.

How They Might Line Up

England are close to full strength, with Tuchel likely to keep faith after the Croatia win, though his strong bench gives him options. Queiroz must find a way to get Semenyo into the game from the start.

Home to the NFL’s New England Patriots, Gillette Stadium in Foxborough sits about 45 minutes south of Boston and is known during the tournament as Boston Stadium. It is hosting seven World Cup matches, and the natural grass surface laid for the tournament should suit England’s passing game. There is more on it over at Wikipedia.

The Record Between Them

The nations have met just once at senior level, a 1-1 friendly at Wembley in 2011, when Asamoah Gyan rescued a late draw in front of 80,000 fans. This is their first ever competitive meeting, and Ghana’s first against England at a World Cup.
