⚽ The Big Picture

Dutch Firepower Meets the Atlas Lions

The Netherlands looked sluggish in a 2-2 opening draw with Japan, but Ronald Koeman’s side caught fire after that, hammering Sweden 5-1 and beating Tunisia to win Group F with 10 goals, a joint-tournament high. The catalyst was Brian Brobbey, the powerful Sunderland striker handed the number nine role, who scored three times in two starts and gives the Oranje a focal point that lets Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malen flourish around him. With Virgil van Dijk marshalling the back and Frenkie de Jong dictating midfield, the Dutch are genuine contenders, even if the trophy has eluded them through three losing finals.

There is one nagging worry: the defence. For all their attacking quality, the Netherlands have not kept a clean sheet in seven matches, and against a side as sharp as Morocco that could be costly. Koeman is expected to make just one change from the Tunisia win, with Micky van de Ven coming in at left-back, while Brobbey and Denzel Dumfries have shaken off minor knocks.

Morocco are no ordinary last-32 opponent. The Atlas Lions stunned the world in 2022, becoming the first African and Arab nation to reach a World Cup semi-final, and they are now the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions, ranked among the world’s top ten. Mohamed Ouahbi’s side opened this tournament with a hugely impressive 1-1 draw with Brazil, in which they more than matched the favourites, before edging Scotland and beating Haiti 4-2. Ismael Saibari, soon to join Bayern Munich, has scored in all three games, Achraf Hakimi has been outstanding storming forward from right-back, and Brahim Diaz can unlock any defence.

This has the makings of a classic. The Netherlands carry the bigger attacking threat, but Morocco are better organised and, on their day, can compete with anyone, as they showed against Brazil. The key duel is Hakimi’s overlapping runs against Gakpo and Malen, who will look to attack the space he leaves. It feels too close to call: the Dutch attack gives them a slight edge, but do not be surprised if Morocco’s discipline drags this to extra time and, perhaps, penalties.
