Haaland's Fairytale Meets England's Firepower
Norway are the story of the tournament. A nation that had never reached a major quarter-final has bulldozed its way to the last eight on the back of Erling Haaland, who has scored in all five games and sits on seven for the summer. After finishing behind France in the group, Solbakken's side edged Ivory Coast and then produced what their coach called the greatest day in Norwegian football history, a 2-1 win over Brazil sealed by a late Haaland brace. Martin Odegaard pulls the strings, Antonio Nusa brings the pace, and the whole team plays without fear. The catch: Norway have conceded in every game and have never beaten European opposition at a World Cup.
England arrived as one of the favourites and, after a stuttering start, look to be timing their run. A 4-2 win over Croatia was followed by a goalless draw with Ghana and a routine win over Panama to top Group L. The knockouts have been tenser: Harry Kane rescued them with two late goals against DR Congo, and then, reduced to ten men at the Azteca, they beat Mexico 3-2 thanks to a Jude Bellingham double and a Kane penalty. Thomas Tuchel's side carry the tournament's deepest attack, with Kane on six, Bellingham the first England midfielder to score four in a single World Cup, and Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Cole Palmer in reserve. This is a third straight World Cup quarter-final for the Three Lions, still chasing a first final since 1966.
History leans heavily England's way. They lead the head-to-head 7-2 with three draws, though almost every meeting has been a friendly, and Norway's two wins both came in World Cup qualifiers back in 1981 and 1993. The last time the sides met competitively was a 1-1 draw at Wembley in 1992; the last of any kind a 1-0 England friendly win in 2014. Remarkably, for two nations with this much history, they have never met at a World Cup finals before now.
There is a Golden Boot subplot too: Haaland (seven) and Kane (six) are both in the hunt, and the loser here loses the chance of two more games to chase it. The match itself looks like a contest between Norway's directness and England's depth. Everything for Norway runs through Haaland, and he will fancy his chances against the John Stones and Marc Guehi pairing he knows so well from Manchester City. But England have more ways to hurt an opponent, and if Declan Rice can choke off the supply line, Tuchel's side have the quality to edge a high-scoring afternoon in the Miami heat.

A Word on Hard Rock Stadium
Branded Miami Stadium for the World Cup, Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens is home to the NFL’s Miami Dolphins and regularly hosts the Miami Open tennis and the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix. Unlike the roofed, air-conditioned venues elsewhere in the tournament, this is an open-air bowl, and a 5pm July kickoff in South Florida means heat and humidity could sap tired legs late on — a factor both benches will have to manage.
