👑 The Group

Group I Standings and What Norway Need

Norway top the group after thumping Iraq 4-1, level on points with France but ahead on goal difference. A second win would all but seal their spot in the last 32. Senegal, beaten by France, are third and badly need a result to stay alive.

⚽ The Big Picture

Haaland vs Koulibaly, and a Final-Venue Statement

Twenty-eight years. That is how long Norway waited to get back to a World Cup, and they have wasted no time announcing themselves. The 4-1 win over Iraq was their biggest result in a generation, with Erling Haaland helping himself to two goals on his long-awaited debut on this stage. There is a lovely thread to it all, too: his father Alfie played for Norway at USA 94, and now Erling is the biggest name at the tournament three decades on.

Stale Solbakken’s side are built for this, a 4-3-3 that presses hard and feeds Haaland in behind, with captain Martin Odegaard, fresh off finally winning the Premier League with Arsenal, pulling the strings. Win here and they are virtually through with a game to spare, free to plan for the group decider against France.

Senegal, though, are far better than a 3-1 defeat to France suggests. For an hour in that opener they were the better side before Mbappe and Olise pulled away late. The African champions still have Sadio Mane, the pace of Ismaila Sarr and Nicolas Jackson, and a defence marshalled by 34-year-old captain Kalidou Koulibaly, whose battle with Haaland in the air could decide this. Lose, and Senegal are all but out. They will come at Norway.

It sets up beautifully. Norway will not be able to bully Senegal the way they bullied Iraq, so Haaland’s movement, not just his strength, will be the key. Senegal have the talent to win it but cannot afford to leave gaps for the most clinical striker on the planet. This one feels tight, low on clear chances, and decided by a single moment. The smart lean is Norway, but do not be shocked if Senegal’s desperation tips it.

How They Might Line Up

Both camps report a clean bill of health. Solbakken has rotation options but is unlikely to break up a winning side, while Senegal’s Pape Thiaw needs his big names firing from the start.

SENEGAL · Pape Thiaw · 4-3-3

Home to the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford is the headline venue of this World Cup, chosen to stage the final on July 19. Holding around 82,500, it is one of the largest grounds in North America. For Norway and Senegal, a chance to test the turf where the trophy will be lifted. More on it at Wikipedia.

The Record Between Them

They have met only once, a friendly back in March 2006 that Senegal won 2-1. With just that single game on record, there is no real pattern to lean on, and this is effectively their first meaningful meeting.
