The Coach Who Beat Brazil, Now Trying to Do It Again
Some context first, because it makes this tie sing. Back in 1998, a young Stale Solbakken was on the pitch as Norway came from behind to beat Brazil 2-1 in the group stage, Tore Andre Flo equalising before Kjetil Rekdal converted a late penalty. Brazil had already sealed top spot before that game, but the result still stands: in four meetings across nearly three decades, Brazil have never once beaten Norway. Solbakken, now the coach rather than the player, walks into MetLife Stadium with a Haaland-powered Norway that has waited 28 years to get back to this stage.
Brazil have not always convinced this summer. Norway’s story is simpler and, in its own way, just as remarkable. Erling Haaland has scored five of their ten goals here, the other five shared between four different teammates and one own goal, and his 86th-minute winner against Ivory Coast delivered Norway’s first ever World Cup knockout victory. Martin Odegaard pulls the strings behind him, and Antonio Nusa has looked a real talent on the counter. The one absence is Julian Ryerson, still missing with the thigh injury that forced him off after just 13 minutes against Senegal, leaving Solbakken to reshuffle his back line once again.
The head-to-head is genuinely unusual for a team of Brazil’s stature, and it will not be lost on the dressing room that a defeat here would match their earliest World Cup exit since 1990. But this Norway side, for all their spirit, do not have Brazil’s depth or their range of attacking match-winners, and were themselves beaten comfortably by France when the opposition took the game seriously. If Gabriel Magalhaes can do to Haaland in New Jersey what he regularly attempts in the Premier League, Brazil’s greater all-round quality should eventually tell, even accounting for their recent wobbles and their curious history against this exact opponent.

Home to the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford is known as New York New Jersey Stadium during the tournament, and is the venue for this summer’s final on July 19. It has already hosted several group games and France’s 3-0 win over Sweden in the last round, and after Sunday it opens its gates just once more, for the final itself.
