Revenge, Redemption and a Final on the Line
There is no need to manufacture a storyline here, because the fixture provides its own. In December 2022, France ended Morocco's fairytale in the Doha semi-final, Theo Hernandez scoring inside five minutes and Randal Kolo Muani sealing a 2-0 win late on, as the Atlas Lions fell just short of becoming the first African side to reach a World Cup final. Nearly four years on, Morocco get their shot at revenge, and the stakes could hardly be higher: a place in the last four, and for France, the chance to become only the second European nation ever to reach three consecutive World Cup finals.
France have simply been the best attacking team in this tournament. Fourteen goals in five games, only two conceded, and a front line that terrifies everyone. Kylian Mbappe has seven goals and shares the Golden Boot lead, Ousmane Dembele has four, and Michael Olise has quietly racked up a tournament-high five assists. Even when they are not at their fluent best, as in the gritty 1-0 win over Paraguay, they find a way, Mbappe converting the decisive penalty. Didier Deschamps does have a midfield concern, with Aurelien Tchouameni a doubt after missing the Paraguay game with a thigh strain, and Marcus Thuram also sidelined, but Manu Kone slotted in seamlessly last time out.
Morocco have taken the harder road and look all the more dangerous for it. A 1-1 draw with Brazil announced them, before wins over Scotland and Haiti, a nerveless penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands, and a commanding 3-0 dismantling of co-hosts Canada powered by an Azzedine Ounahi brace. Achraf Hakimi has been one of the players of the tournament, Brahim Diaz leads the side for assists with four, and there is a genuine togetherness about Walid Regragui's squad. The concern is up front: Ismael Saibari, their three-goal top scorer, limped off against Canada with a hamstring strain and is a real doubt, which could hand Soufiane Rahimi a starting role.
The head-to-head favours France, who have won five of the eight meetings between the nations, with Morocco's solitary victory coming in a 1998 penalty shootout at a minor tournament. But cup football is rarely that simple, and Morocco have made a habit of defying the odds on the biggest stage. France carry more firepower and, crucially, more ways to win a tight game, and we lean towards Les Bleus edging another meeting with an improving Morocco. Do not, however, be surprised if the Atlas Lions drag this one to extra time, or beyond, in front of what will feel like a home crowd.

A Word on Boston Stadium
Better known as Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, home of the NFLβs New England Patriots and MLS side New England Revolution, this venue is known as Boston Stadium during the World Cup. Recent renovations added a striking 22,000-square-foot video board and a 22-story lighthouse.
