The Road to the Round of 16
Switzerland won Group B unbeaten and swept aside Algeria in the Round of 32. Colombia topped Group K without losing a game and have barely been breached all tournament. Every final group table is in our World Cup 2026 groups guide.
The winner advances to the quarter-finals in Kansas City to face the winner of Argentina vs Egypt. If level after 90 minutes, the tie goes to extra time and, if needed, penalties.
The Quiet Swiss Meet Colombia's Wall
Switzerland arrive as the tournament's quiet achievers. A flat 1-1 draw with Qatar on the opening day gave little hint of what followed: a 4-1 dismantling of Bosnia & Herzegovina, a 2-1 win over co-hosts Canada to top Group B, and a composed 2-0 win over Algeria in the Round of 32. Murat Yakin's side have now reached the last 16 for a fourth World Cup running, though they have not gone further since they hosted the 1954 tournament. Their breakout figure is 20-year-old midfielder Johan Manzambi, who has three goals and two assists and began the tournament on the bench before forcing his way into the side. Up front, Breel Embolo has four goals, a tally bettered by only Sepp Hugi and Xherdan Shaqiri in Swiss World Cup history.
Colombia have taken the opposite route to the same place, grinding out results behind the meanest defence in the competition. Nestor Lorenzo's side beat Uzbekistan and DR Congo, held Portugal to a goalless draw to win Group K, then edged Ghana 1-0 in the Round of 32 through Jhon Arias, even after losing their starting striker to injury inside the opening ten minutes. Three straight clean sheets and just one goal conceded all tournament tell the story of their organisation. The spark comes from Luis Diaz, relentless down the left, and 34-year-old captain James Rodriguez, the 2014 Golden Ball winner still pulling the strings. Colombia are back in the last 16 for the first time since 2018 and dreaming of a first quarter-final since 2014.
There is a slim thread of history between them. This is only their fifth meeting, and Colombia lead the series, having won the most recent, a 3-1 friendly back in 2007, as well as a 2-0 group-stage win at the 1994 World Cup, though that tournament ended in early elimination for both. This, though, is their first ever World Cup knockout meeting. Colombia's record in this round is mixed: a famous 2-0 win over Uruguay in 2014, but a penalty heartbreak against England in 2018.
Expect a tight, low-scoring affair. Switzerland will look to stay compact and spring Manzambi and Embolo on the counter; Colombia will trust their structure and feed Diaz in the wide channels. The bookmakers make Colombia narrow favourites and lean towards a game with few goals, with a real chance this one goes the distance. Playing a third straight match at the same Vancouver venue gives Switzerland a sliver of familiarity, but Colombia's defensive resilience and cutting edge on the break look the more likely to settle it.
How They Might Line Up
Switzerland could welcome back Silvan Widmer after a thigh problem, though Luca Jaquez is expected to miss out again. Colombia must plan around the striker injury picked up against Ghana, with James Rodriguez operating behind the front line and Luis Diaz the main threat out wide.

A Word on Vancouver Stadium
Known as Vancouver Stadium during the World Cup, BC Place is Canada’s premier covered venue and home to MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps and the CFL’s BC Lions. Its climate-controlled bowl holds conditions at a steady 22°C whatever the weather outside, and its illuminated roof, framed by the harbour and coastal mountains, gives one of the sport’s most striking backdrops. This is the venue’s final match of the 2026 World Cup, and Switzerland play here for a third game running, a small but real edge. There is more on it at Wikipedia.
There is not much history here. The sides have met just four times, most recently a 3-1 friendly win for Colombia in 2007, and once at a World Cup, when Colombia won 2-0 in the 1994 group stage. This is their first ever World Cup knockout meeting.

Who is favourite to win Switzerland vs Colombia?
Colombia are narrow favourites with the bookmakers, largely on the back of the tournament's best defensive record. Switzerland are unbeaten, though, so a close, low-scoring game with extra time a real possibility is widely expected.
What happens if it is a draw after 90 minutes?
This is a knockout tie, so a draw means 30 minutes of extra time and then a penalty shootout if the teams are still level.
Who does the winner play next?
The winner of Switzerland vs Colombia advances to the quarter-finals in Kansas City to face the winner of Argentina vs Egypt.
What is the prediction?
We lean narrowly towards Colombia, around 1-0, given their defensive solidity and the threat of Luis Diaz. Switzerland's discipline and Embolo's form mean a low-scoring game, and extra time would be no surprise.
