Mikel Oyarzabal scored twice, Pedro Porro added a header, and Luis de la Fuente's side cruised to a 3-0 win that looked far more like the reigning European champions than their nervy group-stage form suggested. Best of all for Spain, Lamine Yamal appears to have rediscovered his sharpest form, giving this side a cutting edge in behind that few opponents can live with.
This fixture rarely disappoints. The most famous recent meeting came at the 2018 World Cup, a breathless 3-3 group-stage draw in which Ronaldo scored a hat-trick, including a stunning stoppage-time free kick that levelled the game at the death. Four years earlier, at Euro 2012, these same two nations met in a goalless semi-final that Spain eventually won on penalties on their way to the trophy. Neighbours, rivals, and two teams that never seem to produce a dull 90 minutes against each other.
On current form, Spain look the more complete side, sharper in midfield, more clinical in front of goal, and defensively watertight all tournament.
