This is the reigning European champion, and by most measures the best side left in the draw.
There is, however, a real wrinkle. Spain lose two of their attacking width for this one, with Nico Williams and Yeremy Pino both picking up injuries against Uruguay and expected to miss out, leaving Yamal and Baena to carry the flanks almost alone. Rodri, so often the base of everything Spain do, is understood to be playing through a knock that will need surgery once the tournament ends, though he is expected to start regardless. And history carries its own quiet weight: Spain have not actually won a World Cup knockout match since Andres Iniesta’s extra-time winner in the 2010 final, going out in the group stage in 2014 and losing on penalties in both 2018 and 2022.
Austria, for their part, are simply happy to still be here. Ralf Rangnick has dragged this country back into the World Cup knockouts for the first time since 1954, a 72-year gap, and they only made it out of the group on the final day, Sasa Kalajdzic scoring 96 minutes into a wild 3-3 draw with Algeria, coming off the bench to net inside a minute, the third-fastest substitute goal of this entire tournament. That result made Austria the first side in World Cup history to avoid defeat after falling behind in second-half stoppage time. It tells you everything about how this team plays: relentless pressing, real goals at the other end, and defending that leaks just as often.
That is Austria’s one route into this game. Rangnick's high press can occasionally win the ball off Spain in dangerous areas, and if David Alaba and Marko Arnautovic, both carrying knocks from the Algeria game, are fit, they have enough quality to punish a mistake. But Spain's midfield is built precisely to play through pressure rather than panic against it, and the gulf in overall quality is significant. We expect Spain to win comfortably, with goals at both ends given Austria's habit of conceding, and this feels far more likely to be a routine evening than the shock upset Austria will be dreaming of.

A Word on SoFi Stadium
Home to the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, SoFi Stadium in Inglewood is known as Los Angeles Stadium during the tournament, and it is the newest of all the World Cup venues, having opened in 2020.
