There is a delicious subplot running through this 2026 World Cup knockout tie in Vancouver. Algeria are coached by Vladimir Petkovic, the same man who spent seven years and three major tournaments in charge of Switzerland, and now he returns to face the team he built. Switzerland arrive unbeaten and full of confidence behind breakout star Johan Manzambi. Algeria arrive chasing something they have never managed at a World Cup: a knockout win. Here is how to watch Switzerland vs Algeria, the kick-off time where you are, the lineups and our prediction.

The Road to the Round of 32
Switzerland won Group B unbeaten, edging out co-hosts Canada on the final day. Algeria finished third in Group J and went through as one of the best third-placed teams. Every final table is in our World Cup 2026 groups guide.
The winner stays in Vancouver for the Round of 16 to face the winner of Colombia vs Ghana. If level after 90 minutes, the tie goes to extra time and, if needed, penalties.
Petkovic Returns to Face the Team He Built
Start with the coaching angle, because it is too good to ignore. Vladimir Petkovic spent seven years and three major tournaments in charge of Switzerland before Murat Yakin took over, and now he walks back into a World Cup knockout tie against the team he shaped, this time leading Algeria. He knows exactly how Switzerland set up, and exactly how hard they are to break down, which should make this a fascinating tactical puzzle even before a ball is kicked.
Switzerland come into this unbeaten and building momentum at the right time. A opening 1-1 draw with Qatar was the only blemish, and Yakin's side responded by beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 and then co-hosts Canada 2-1 to top Group B. The story of their tournament so far is Johan Manzambi, an 18-year-old who has scored three goals and set up another despite starting only one of the three group games, and who now looks like a genuine contender for the Young Player award. With Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler still marshalling midfield at 33 and 34, and Breel Embolo linking play up front, this is a settled, in-form side with very few injury worries, just a hip knock for full-back Silvan Widmer that Luca Jaquez is ready to cover.
Algeria's route here was far bumpier. A 3-0 hammering by Argentina was followed by a gritty win over Jordan, and then a wild final group game against Austria that swung one way and then another before finishing 3-3, enough, in the end, to send Algeria through on goal difference. Riyad Mahrez, at 35 still the beating heart of this team with 38 international goals to his name, will carry much of the creative burden, though star performer Mohamed Amoura is a major doubt with an unspecified injury. There is uncertainty in goal too: Oussama Benbot struggled against Austria, and Petkovic may restore Luca Zidane between the posts for a game this important.
Whatever happens, this is already history for Algeria. Their only previous World Cup knockout appearance came in 2014, a narrow extra-time defeat to eventual champions Germany, and they have never won a World Cup knockout match in their history. Head to head, the record is not encouraging either: two friendlies in the 1980s, both won by Switzerland, and Algeria have never beaten this opponent. Switzerland's greater composure, defensive organisation and the Manzambi factor should be enough to see them through, though Mahrez and a motivated Algeria, with a coach who knows every weakness in the Swiss setup, are more than capable of making this uncomfortable.
How They Might Line Up
Switzerland have a fitness doubt over Silvan Widmer (hip), with Luca Jaquez ready to deputise at right-back. Algeria are without the injured Mohamed Amoura, with Amine Gouiri leading the line, and Luca Zidane could return in goal after Oussama Benbot's shaky display against Austria.

A Word on BC Place
BC Place has already staged some of the tournament's most memorable group games, including Canada's 6-0 win over Qatar and Egypt's first ever World Cup victory. Switzerland already played here once, beating co-hosts Canada, so this ground should feel familiar. There is more on it at Wikipedia.
The nations have met just twice, both friendlies in the 1980s, and Switzerland won both: 2-1 in November 1983 and 2-0 in May 1986. Algeria have never beaten Switzerland at any level, and this will be their first ever competitive meeting.
Switzerland vs Algeria: Quick Answers
What time does Switzerland vs Algeria kick off?
11pm Eastern in the US, which is 8pm local in Vancouver. In the UK it is 4am BST in the early hours of Friday, July 3, and in Bern and Algiers it is around 4 to 5am. The date is Thursday, July 2, 2026.
What channel is Switzerland vs Algeria on in the US?

Is Switzerland vs Algeria free to watch in the UK?
Yes. It is live and free on the BBC via iPlayer, and also streaming on ITVX, though it is a very late 4am kick-off.
What happens if it is a draw after 90 minutes?
This is a knockout tie, so a draw means 30 minutes of extra time and then a penalty shootout if the teams are still level. The winner reaches the Round of 16; the loser is out.
Who does the winner play next?
The winner of Switzerland vs Algeria stays in Vancouver for the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of Colombia vs Ghana on July 7.
Why does Algeria's coach have Swiss connections?
Vladimir Petkovic, Algeria's head coach, spent seven years and led Switzerland at three major tournaments before taking charge of Algeria. This game is his first competitive meeting with his former team.
Has Algeria ever won a World Cup knockout match?
No. Algeria's only previous appearance in the World Cup knockout stage was in 2014, when they lost 2-1 to eventual champions Germany in extra time. They are still chasing a first ever knockout win.
What is the prediction?
We expect a narrow Switzerland win, around 2-1. Switzerland are more settled and better organised, though Algeria's attacking quality, and a coach who knows the Swiss setup inside out, make an upset far from impossible.
